"Let me explain, beloved, that the karma of incorrect diet is cumulative lifetime after lifetime; for the false appetites and bad eating habits accumulate in the desire body. The entities tag along and you reincarnate not only with the same bad habits and false appetites but with bodies that are patterned after those that you have left in the previous life. Be of good cheer, then, and know that it is not a small task at hand but that it is doable to attain that mastery in the flesh."

" . . . Thus I do not recommend that disciples go without sleep or try to make the hurdle of these fantastic diets that some of you have practiced, starving yourselves almost to the death and weakening your ability to withstand the temptations of the dark forces. Remember Jesus’ words that 'not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but that which cometh out.' This he learned at the feet of Lord Buddha.

"For it is well known in the circles of the Brotherhood that many times chelas of the Light, in their desire to be austere and in their belief that austerity is a path to victory, deprive themselves of the nutrients that Mother Nature has placed within all food for a balanced diet for her children. And thus their nervous system is not prepared to cope with the emotional stress that comes to the disciple on the Path.

"I would also remind you that fasting at prolonged lengths is dangerous unless you are under a guru, an Ascended Master, or one representative in embodiment whom you know to have the authority and the ability to extend the protection of Hierarchy to you during periods of fasting. Jesus claimed me as his guru and called me Father, and yet I transferred that to the Almighty on high and to his own God Presence as I served to anchor through his consciousness the Cosmic Christ energies that gave him the authority and the power over all human conditions and circumstance.

"Thus when he was alone in the desert forty days and forty nights fasting and was delivered up unto the devil to be tempted, I was there overshadowing him with the mighty Archangels. And thus he, too, even in his great state of attainment, abided by the rule of the Brotherhood to fast only under the protection of Hierarchy.

"I warn you of this; for I observe that some of our children of Light in various parts of the world, through the diets they have practiced, have had enter and intrude upon their consciousness demons and discarnates and direct emissaries of the black brotherhood. These forces, entering in when their body metabolism was at its lowest ebb, identified with the soul and with the etheric envelope and began to subtly weave an alter ego, an alternative pattern to the true awareness of the Christ within.

"Thus these precious hearts who ought to be in the company of the highest devotees upon the planet are caught in delusion and in strange practices that are not in keeping with a balanced manifestation of the true spiritual life.

"I offer this information to you this night because I perceive that you are sincerely desirous of making progress on the path of purity, total purification of your four lower bodies; and indeed this is a correct goal. But let us understand that the Ascended Master standards of purity are not always the same as the world’s concepts of what purity ought to be. For the world gauges purity from the standpoint of its own impurity.

"Therefore, because mankind entertain a sense of guilt and sin, they have a vast condemnation which they bear against themselves for having partaken of human error and sin consciousness. And therefore their concept of purity is to completely wipe out the forcefield of the evolving human consciousness, and only then will they be satisfied. And thus they deprive themselves of all human joy and expression and the true happiness which God intends the saints to have.

"And so I say, when you call for purity, realize that God has ordained the platform of the four lower bodies in the present state which you now enjoy for the purpose of evolution. Total denial of the needs of these four lower bodies can result in a warping of the consciousness and an ultimate rebellion of the outer consciousness against the Path and against the very Law that you desire to outpicture.

"For the four lower bodies and your evolving consciousness can stand only so much beating, so much whipping, beloved ones, and then there is a time for balance and a need to have balance to regain one’s perspective along the way."

"The soul experiences moods and energies, which correlate to specific meridians and organs. According to the principles of Oriental medicine, the chi (life force) flows through each meridian and organ at a specific time of day, as shown in this chart from the text Fundamentals of Chinese Acupuncture by Andrew Ellis, Nigel Wiseman and Ken Boss:

"The text explains:

"As day turns to night and one season follows another the rhythms of the body follow the rhythms of the natural world. Chi flows through the body in a daily cycle that begins in the lung channel [meridian] and ends at the last point on the liver channel. It then proceeds to the lung to begin once again . . . The time listed opposite to each channel [in the chart] represents the time of maximum chi and blood in the given channel. This information is useful in both diagnosis and treatment. A symptom that occurs regularly at 4:00 a.m., for example, may be indicative of a lung disorder and may best (though inconveniently) be treated at that time.

"William Tara, in his book Macrobiotics and Human Behavior, gives the following table, listing specific organs and the corresponding behavioral characteristics that reflect either balance or imbalance:

"One can see from this table that if one does not maintain balance in his physical body, his emotional well-being will suffer. What the table does not show is that the soul will also suffer as a result of the condition of the body. This is a spiritual suffering and it carries over into the mental health and the psychology of the lifestream.

"The soul recedes as you recede, the soul is happy as you are happy, and the soul ascends as you ascend. But her fortunes sit squarely on the base of your pyramid of life. This pyramid contains (1) the four lower bodies, (2) the systems and organs that make up the body, and (3) the corresponding chakras that rise from the base of the pyramid to the All-Seeing Eye in the capstone.

"The strength of the soul is dependent upon the health of the individual organs, their harmonious interaction, and whether or not the soul chooses to embody a perpetual joie de vivre. The soul's karma and her past incarnations, as well as the balance of light or darkness in her chakras, are also factors that affect her physical health and determine in part where she is on the path of becoming an integrated being in God."

Elizabeth C. Prophet

"Now then, follow the recommendations for the strengthening and clearing of the physical heart that have come to you out of the East under the name of the macrobiotic diet. Pursue whatever healing methods are lawful, but above all remember that it is the Ruby Ray and the Ruby Ray Buddha that can give you the strengthening of the heart, the renewal of the heart, the rejuvenation of the heart.

"Call to me daily, giving the preamble of the Dhyani Buddhas before you offer your prayers. You can tie that preamble to any prayer for the healing of the physical heart in yourself and loved ones. You can use it for those undergoing open-heart surgery. And the violet flame is key, beloved. For some conditions of the heart are karmic; others are simply karmic by a lifetime of wrong diet. Thus, hardness of heart must dissolve by the Ruby Ray and the violet flame if you would have the renewal of the heart.

"Love your enemies. Do good to them who persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Purge yourself of all anger and all Martian energies, for the heart is the repository of these.

"Yes, beloved, take care of the heart and you will see the increase of Light and the increase of opportunity. In the past certain individuals on the spiritual path have received life extensions. This is an opportunity for any of you to make an offer to me, the Buddha of the Ruby Ray, of what you will do to sweeten the heart, to increase the love, the compassion and the charity of your heart.

"Thus call to me that I might tend your heart. For we must work together, I not alone and you not alone but the two of us together with many masterful angels who are surgeons of vast intelligence and knowledge.

"So value the violet flame and its alchemy with the Ruby Ray, then value the purging of yourself of the not-qualities, the negative qualities, and see how your heart will be the open door for Ruby Ray angels to step through the veil.

"Life is opportunity, beloved. And opportunity is given by the Lords of Karma this night to those who have served and served and served with holiness and love, devotion to the will of God and a humility that is truly rare.

"I come before each one of you simultaneously and I place my hand upon your head and I give you a pat. For one and all you are my children of the Path of the Ruby Ray, and I wish to bow to the Light within you and to thank you for your calls to the Ruby Ray. For they have stopped bullets dead in their tracks that were intended for Lightbearers and others in the earth. They have stopped malevolence and every form of darkness.

"Keep on keeping on, beloved. You are winning vast victories. Be not discouraged. Discouragement is the sharpest tool of the Devil. Banish it, know who you are, be one-pointed in your mission and let no remark or any accusation or anything at all perturb you in the least.

"What is that to thee? Follow your Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

"I am with you unto your victory in the Ruby Ray octaves of Light. I salute you in the profoundest love of all divine beings who ensoul cosmos, who love you from the fount of the Divine Mother.

"Call to me the moment you need help. My legions are there instantaneously. They do not move in time and space but by shafts of light from the Infinite One."

The Buddha of the Ruby Ray

" . . . And I have staked that jewel upon your attainment and on the belief, the absolute fervent belief that you will turn the tide of darkness, that you will respond to my message, that you will not fail to respond and to protect your bodies as the sacred temples of the Mother housing the flame of the Spirit, that you will muster the gumption to keep those bodies intact and in form to make the transition into the new age."

Human Organs
"A government can be compared to our lungs. Our lungs are best
when we don't realize they are helping us breathe.
It is when we are constantly aware of our lungs that we know
they have come down with an illness."—Lao-Tzu

" . . . The Mother will come to you to resolve all schism in the four lower bodies, in the soul and in the spirit. Be the Mother, beloved, and know that that Mother-flame in you—adored, obeyed, deferred to at all times—is the key to the ascension flame, for the ascension flame is the consummate manifestation of Mother.

" . . . The only strength you can count on in this Community is the strength of the individual. If the individual member is not strong, the body is not strong. If the liver, the kidney, the lungs or the heart is not strong, the body will not be strong.

" . . . Whether or not you can expand the flame of your heart to fill the cosmos of your present forcefield or systems of worlds depends on whether you decide that your Godhood—your mission and your Presence—is unique to all the universes and that without you many will be lost. That is why it is good to walk alone, whether in the woods or in the mountains (where you know you are safe) to experience your aloneness, all-oneness with God and to sense that you are as important as the brightest star or the dimmest and have that equal potential [of Infinity]."

"Do you recognize the nerves within your body, beloved ones, as a network of the divine radiance extending its consciousness up to be charged with the radiance of God? Do you perceive that the very blood flowing through your veins, beloved ones, is actually charged with the golden-pink radiance of God, the love flame pulsing from your hearts, the love flame charging your nerves and your whole body with the radiance of God?

"Well, beloved ones, when you understand this and use this great law of the sacred fire, your bodies will be a living, pulsating flame of love. You will find that you are a god of your own universe, and you will no longer know the pain of unhappiness."

Archangel Chamuel

"As you rise in consciousness you will discover, that those needs which you require in one plane of consciousness are not necessarily those which you required in former times when your body was vibrating at a more dense rate of vibration.

"A propos of this subject, I would caution all, then, not to condemn their fellowmen for their habits of eating or of living. For all are not at the same place of vibration. even though all maybe in the physical octave, and each one must find the manifestation of the Holy Comforter at that point in the dimension, the time sequence, where he himself is manifesting.

"Do you realize that all men do not manifest at the same place in consciousness? And this means that the actual chemistries of their bodies, their emotional bodies too, are not vibrating at the same place. But because this manifestation is within one spectrum, you continue to see and converse and commingle with these individuals; yet in reality they are not all manifesting at your own rate of vibration.

"You must, then, learn not to condemn, not to criticize, but to understand that here is a flower that is unfolding in another garden of the consciousness of God, in one of his many mansions."

Father Enoch

"Then I also come with my sword, holding that blue-flame sword three inches from the spine or at a greater distance, depending on the attainment and purity and cleansing of the chakras of the lifestream and the four lower bodies. And I am able to wield a momentum of Light that may cross time and space for you, beloved, to clear the records and the residue of past preoccupations in lower astral vibrations whereby you have acquired a buildup of astral substance and entities.

"How wonderful it is, then, when in true prayer and fasting you may find dislodged even from the physical body those substances that begin to burden the brain, the cells, and to cause premature aging, graying, loss of memory, and the failing agility of both the mental body and the physical. With this there does also come indulgence in self-concerns and self-pity and even the timidity whereby you know that the yinness of self is not merely what one eats but what one hasn’t disgorged oneself ofthose accumulations of toxins that prevent the flowering of the Eternal Youth and the presence of Sanat Kumara within the body temple.

"Many of you are veterans at fasting. Therefore I, Astrea, say to you that to pursue the fast in the heart of Alpha and Omega by partaking of the holy, holy foodwhich is the brown rice, [which is in] itself in [the] polarity [and harmony of the yin and yang]this, then, you may do. You may fast on this rice for a day, eating as you will, chewing well. We like the number 108, for it is the completion of the mantra; we like the mantra 'I AM Alpha and Omega in the white fire core of Being,' therefore [by prayer and fasting] each and every cell receiving the spring-cleaning that is due.

"One day, two days, three days, four or five, six or seven, eight or nine or ten *ten days, beloved, with only a small amount of bancha tea and meditation upon God and breathing profoundly the fresh air and the sacred fire breath with [yogic or other exercise]. This indeed is a fasting and a self-emptying that has a spiritual/physical purpose. It is for the victory of the soul, the sharpening of the mind and the intensity, intensifying, of the fire of the Spirit. See, then, what incurable condition of psyche or mind or body you may heal by such a participation.

"Understand, beloved, that this fasting is not complete without profound prayer. But you have the science of mantra."

* The macrobiotic diet was given by Sanat Kumara to the Lightbearers and, among others, to Lord Lanto when he was embodied as the Yellow Emperor (c.2704 b.c.). The principles of macrobiotics are based on The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (the Nei Ching), the oldest known book of Chinese medicine. See Elizabeth Clare Prophet, January 3 and 4, 1988, three audiocassettes, B88010-12.

The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, the foundation of the macrobiotic diet based on the yin-yang principle, describes a ten-day rice gruel fast as the first remedy for disease. Ronald E. Kotzsch writes in 'Macrobiotics: Yesterday and Today' that The Yellow Emperor’s Classic asserts that food is an important means for treating disease. It says that in ‘medieval days’ the sages treated illness first by diet, usually prescribing a regime of rice gruel for ten days.

If this treatment was not successful, then the roots and leaves of medicinal plants were used to harmonize the energies. Acupuncture and moxibustion were employed only as a last resort. If the emotions and the will of the patient are stable, says the Classic, then cereals alone can effect a cure. Grains have a special importance and power as human food. Water and grains are the root of life and ‘death comes only when they are exhausted.’ In particular, rice is mentioned as a vital and harmonious food.

The Yellow Emperor’s Classic is attributed to Huang Ti, the legendary Yellow Emperor (born circa 2704 b.c.), but was probably not written down until about 500 b.c. The Yellow Emperor is believed to have ruled China during a golden age and is considered the ancestor of all Chinese people. Lord Lanto, working under Sanat Kumara, is said to have inspired The Yellow Emperor’s Classic.

A ten-day brown rice fast may be too severe for those who have not already practiced the macrobiotic diet for some time. Such a fast is not recommended unless you get good macrobiotic counseling, know the body’s signs of yin and yang, and know how to break the fast. Instead, you can try a rice fast for one or two days. Eat as much pressure-cooked brown rice as you want.

You can follow this with a couple of days of rice and vegetables with a light miso soup as the body gently comes off the rice fast and adapts to a greater variety of vegetarian foods. The longer the rice fast, the easier you should make the transition. It is wise to wait a week or more after the rice fast before eating fish, if this is part of your regular diet. Because of the past diets people have been on, reactions may vary from severe to mild to none at all. El Morya’s advice is: Go easy, be well informed, proceed with caution, know when to stop.

Recipe for pressure-cooked brown rice: 1/2 teaspoon good sea salt to 5 cups of rice and 8 cups of pure water. Wash rice and put in pressure cooker. Add water and bring to a boil. Add salt and place cover on pressure cooker. Bring cooker up to pressure then reduce flame to medium-low. Put flame deflector under cooker and cook for 45 min. Remove pressure cooker from flame and let sit for 5 min. without opening, then remove rice from the pot so it doesn’t keep cooking. For regular daily use of brown rice when not fasting, use 1-2 teaspoons of salt per pot according to personal taste and need.

Recipe for bancha twig tea (also called kukicha): If the twigs you have are not already roasted, you should roast them in a dry skillet for 3-4 min. Place 1-2 tablespoons bancha twigs in a pot with 4 cups of pure water, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 min., or 10-15 min. for stronger tea. When tea is finished steeping, remove twigs from the tea and let them dry. Twigs can be reused a few times, adding some new twigs each time.

Rice fast in preparation for Pentecost and other holy days:

It is suggested that students of the Ascended Masters fast one day on brown rice, taking bancha tea as necessary, before Pentecost. Several days before the sun-sign change and the new moon each month are auspicious times for prayer and fasting. The 10 days before the solstices and equinoxes are the high marks for self-emptying in preparation for the infilling, invigorating Light released from the Great Central Sun on these four occasions. Also from six to two weeks prior to your birthday and the week before the menstrual cycle are good opportunities for spiritual and physical cleansing and rebuilding for new beginnings. And may all of our prayer and fasting be dedicated to the Victory of our dear El Morya.

"Therefore, beloved, Mary and Raphael extend their hands to you . . . and the emerald light does radiate from all of their chakras and from their hands to you. It is a restoration of the wholeness of the soul, which may become a reality to you as you prepare the physical chalice according to the disciplines of diet that have been given to you by the Mother and that you may learn and pursue in this city of light."

Note: During the 1988 New Year’s Retreat at the Royal Teton Ranch, the Messenger lectured on the macrobiotic diet, including how human behavior and physical and mental health relate to the condition of the body’s organs and what foods are beneficial to the health of the organs. The diet was given by Sanat Kumara to the Lightbearers and, among others, to Lord Lanto when he was embodied as the Yellow Emperor (c.2704 b.c.). Lanello

"It is in the imperfect human condition that the yin quickly becomes the out-of-control state. It is [likewise] in the imperfect [human] condition that the yang cannot express the fullness of joy. But in the cosmos of the absolute manifestation of the miraculous T'ai Chi, behold Alpha and Omega! Behold the White Fire Bodies of twin flames! Behold the perfect balance of cosmic forces! And upon this polarity there is the weaving of the warp and woof of these secret-ray spheres.

" . . . The [fact that physical] balance has been taken from you in this civilization by wrong diet has been made clear [to you] by myself, because for want of that discipline I have had to reject many. I simply cannot hold on to one who cannot hold on to light. Thus I have told you 'no sugar' and I have meant it. But you must be balanced in taking in that balance of food that will give to you neither extreme [of the yin or yang].

"We have presented the diet of the Eastern adepts—which you must perfect for yourselves; it is not all written down. It [in] itself is not perfected. But do not neglect to experiment with something that has so much validity and that does work. You will soon discover what does not work for you.

"Our teachings have been designed to bring you to the place where you could hold that balance [of the Christ Presence] in the emotions as well as in the imagination. You know when the body is weak how the mind does wander into pockets of negativity [and] condemnation toward [self or] others. This, beloved, shows that in the body you are not the master in Christ of [the body] or of the mind.

"Thus, when you achieve that certain level of your own [physical and emotional] balance, you will truly know when you are able to be the true friend of your chosen Ascended Master. Friendship is loyalty. It is faith. It is trust. It is all qualities of the blue ray [such] as El Morya has expressed in your regard, upholding you as his friends when, I must say, you did betray him even to his very face.

"These things ought not to have been! And you are paying a pretty penny in his absence. Thus the Law will teach one way or another the great need for balance, the need for gratitude, the need for appreciation, and the need to hold up one's own end of the bargain. And that is what a Guru-chela relationship is, beloved. For you it is a bargain! And it only becomes a bargain for the Master when you return to him such service and light whereby [because of your constancy, dependability, trustworthiness, and honor] he can increase his service to the planet and to others."

Lord Maitreya

"As I was saying, it is most important in consideration of your personal line of defense, precious hearts, that you realize that the archangels, and the legions of my band in particular, inspired upon your own messenger a dedication to fasting. Therefore, Lanello instituted for his staff, one day a week, a twenty-four or thirty-six-hour fast and periodically three-day fasts and then longer.

"Now, I would bring to your attention that the power of Christ in the wilderness over Satan and his temptation was the power of fasting and prayer itself. I, therefore, was about to encourage you to realize that when you go forth for the binding of the seed of Satan and all of his hosts
and the remnant of their manifestation since his judgment, you would do well to consider how the sacred fire in you increases and how the power of the Holy Spirit can come upon you to challenge those very conditions that are of world moment and against which you seem helpless. The more the body temple is able to carry the sacred fire, being emptied and being in contact with the Holy Spirit, the more dynamic release can we give through you.

"Now, there are two types of releases. The momentum of the decrees given, whether you are fasting or not, is a momentum of energy and light which not only gives us the authority but also of the momentum of your energy and of that of your lifestream to challenge certain conditions. And this is why we encourage the repetition of the mantra and its acceleration.

"The next form of release coming forth from you is the mighty fiat of light, whereby with a single call you say, 'Mighty I AM Presence, in thy name I call to beloved Archangel Michael: Bind the demons and discarnates of pornography! Burn through! Burn through! Burn through and let judgment descend upon them! And let their house of cards collapse in this hour! I demand it in the name of my Mighty I AM Presence! Amen.'

"That is a fiat of the Word, beloved hearts, and it gains fire by the Holy Spirit with you. As I give that decree, I have the clarity of the messenger’s heart by which to release it in this octave. And thus you seek her intercession, knowing well that in her invocations is that momentum of release.

"You may have it also. And therefore, a final word from my heart to you this evening was to remind you that there is no replacement for the weekly fast after the walk of Lanello and also to remind you that there is excess baggage in the form of toxins and chemicals that you absorb into the system which are cleansed and released even through a single day of drinking pure water, with some added chlorophyll if you wish.

"Now, beloved hearts, remember also that this does bring rest to the functioning of the body. And therefore the soul is free to rise, for not so much energy is drawn down into the digestive process."

Archangel Michael

Mental and emotional problems may also be related to biochemical imbalances, such as those caused by hypoglycemia, candida, food and environmental allergies, and hypothyroidism.

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a sign of imbalance in the glandular systemthe pancreas, pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands. This is usually caused by the consumption of a diet high in refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, sugar and other sweeteners, including honey, fructose and fruit juice concentrates. Excessive coffee consumption in addition to lack of proper sleep and exercise will also aggravate this condition. In addition to a wide range of physical problems, hypoglycemia has been associated with aggressive personality changes, rapid mood swings, hysteria, depression, anxiety, phobias (including claustrophobia), compulsions, violent temper tantrums, introversion, nightmares, lack of mental alertness, confusion, apathy, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, irritability and uncontrolled crying spells.

Candida albicans is a yeast microorganism normally found to a certain extent in everyone's gastrointestinal system. The taking of prolonged or frequent courses of antibiotics, birth control pills or cortisone (or other immunosuppressant drugs) often allows for the uncontrolled growth of candida beyond its normal limits. Such unchecked growth eventually results in a number of toxic substances being released into the bloodstream that can weaken the immune system and can cause a wide variety of mental, emotional and physical problems, including food allergies. Mental and emotional problems that have been associated with candida overgrowth include agitation, anxiety, poor concentration, confusion, depression, food cravings, hostility, hyperactivity, hyperirritability, lethargy, memory loss and the aggravation of schizophrenia.

Food and environmental allergies are the general terms that describe a variety of mental, emotional and physical problems that can develop when an individual is exposed to foods or substances in his environment to which he is sensitive. Common foods known to produce an allergic response in sensitive individuals are milk, corn, wheat and eggs, but any food can be a problem. Some environmental allergens (substances that induce allergies) are pollen, formaldehyde, perfumes and exhaust fumes. Mental and emotional symptoms that have been related to food and environmental allergies are similar to those of hypoglycemia and candida.

Hypothyroidism is a disease in which there is inadequate production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Every cell in the body is dependent upon thyroid hormone to produce the energy it needs to carry out its own unique functions. An inadequate level of thyroid hormone is associated with a broad spectrum of problems, many of them physical; the mental and emotional conditions associated with hypothyroidism are irritability, hostility, mental sluggishness and dullness, suspiciousness, delusions, inability to concentrate, introversion, failing memory, temper tantrums, contrariness and depression.

The macrobiotic approach to understanding the relationship between psychological problems and weaknesses in various organs is explained in the book Macrobiotics and Human Behavior by William Tara (currently out of print). He gives the following summary of the positive and negative attributes associated with different organs when they are in their strong or weakened states respectively:

Mother Mary

If you decide to fast during Lent, try pressure-cooked brown rice and bancha tea. It's a fantastic fast! (See the recipes below) Rice focuses the perfect balance of Alpha and Omega, the yin and the yang, the plus and the minus. Fasting on rice will assist you in balancing these energies in the body.

Make your fast a holy experience, beginning with the cooking of the rice itself. The Messenger suggests that you offer the rosary or sing bhajans while you prepare it.

You can partake of the rice at intervals, whenever you feel the need for sustaining nourishment. Let it be a period of spiritual meditation. As you peacefully eat the rice, visualize yourself taking in the Light of Alpha and Omega. Bless each mouthful as you receive the Light of your Father-Mother God, with which they endow it.

Eat the rice slowly in small amounts, being certain to chew each mouthful at least 50 times. While chewing, you can silently give the mantra "I AM Alpha and Omega in the white fire core of being." The bancha tea, which is also very balanced, can be sipped and swallowed with
the rice or drunk 10 to 20 minutes after eating the rice.

Fasting on brown rice is a celebration of wholeness. The Messenger has said:

Each time I look at a kernel of rice I think of the great whole of the cosmos and the Tao and the yin and yang and this blessed, balanced food. It is almost like taking Holy Communion to receive it into the mouth in peace and in contemplation of God-to chew each mouthful a minimum of 50 times for the assimilation, as it were, of the Body and Blood of the Universal Christ, to take that in and feel the balancing of one's forces and then to proceed with one's preferred meditation. It is a wonderful spiritual exercise.

You will find a tremendous peace coming into your being because in every organ that is too yang, the rice will provide the spiritual yinness; in every organ that is too yin, the rice will provide the spiritual yangness. And day by day and little by little, you will be bringing balance, as an alchemist of the Spirit, to your physical body.

Although the brown-rice fast is entirely optional, it is recommended as a sustaining fast by which you can observe Lent and also receive healthful benefits. You may wish to fast one to three days and then eat cooked vegetables and other grains (barley, as spring approaches) for a day or two, or a week. In addition, if you would like to give up something for Lent, the Messenger suggests that you abstain from red meat and sweets.

On March 25, 1989, Elohim Astrea spoke of fasting on brown rice and bancha tea. Beloved Astrea said of this fast: "This indeed is a fasting and a self-emptying that has a spiritual/physical purpose. It is for the victory of the soul, the sharpening of the mind and the intensifying of the fire of the spirit. See, then, what incurable condition of psyche or mind or body you may heal by such a participation."

RECIPES

Pressure-Cooked Brown Rice

Ingredients:

4 cups short-grain brown rice

7 to 8 cups purified water

1 pinch of sea salt per cup of rice

(Muramoto sea salt is best.)

Note: If you have an allergy to pressure-cooked brown rice or have problems digesting it, try toasting your rice before cooking it. Follow steps 1 through 3 below. Then, while the rice is still wet, put it in a cast-iron skillet. Start with the flame on high and stir the rice continually. It will take about 10 minutes for the rice to dry. When dry, lower the flame to medium. Keep stirring the rice for about 10 more minutes until it turns a golden color. Transfer the rice to the pressure cooker and proceed to step 4.

Recipe

1. Sort the rice on a tray or cookie sheet to remove small rocks and debris.

2. Put 4 cups of short-grain brown rice in a stainless-steel pressure cooker.

3. Wash the rice by adding approximately 7 to 8 cups of water. Stir gently with your hand in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Pour the water out using a strainer. Repeat 3 times.

4. Add 7 to 8 cups of purified water to the rice in the pressure cooker. The amount of water you use depends on how moist or dry you want the rice.

5. Put the pressure cooker on a high flame and bring to a boil without the lid.

6. When the water boils, remove the foam that has come to the surface. It may contain debris.

7. Add 4 pinches of sea salt. Cover and seal the pressure cooker.

8. Leave on a high flame until the pressure is high enough.

9. Reduce flame to low and cook the rice for 50 minutes. You may need to put a flame diffuser under the pot to prevent burning.

10. Remove the rice from the stove. Do not take the lid off until the pressure has dissipated naturally (about 15 minutes). If you are in a hurry and must remove the lid immediately, first put the pot under cold running water.

11. Take the lid off the pot and gently stir the rice with a wooden spoon.

Purchasing Information

Purchase organic rice if possible, as non-organic rice may contain pesticides and chemicals. Many large grocery chains now carry health food items, including brown rice. Natural food co-ops and health food stores often carry rice in bulk at a lesser price. One good brand is Lundberg, which offers an excellent quality of organic short-grain brown rice.

When purchasing a pressure cooker, it is important to choose one made of stainless steel rather than aluminum. Most large hardware stores or cooking-equipment stores carry stainless-steel models. Presto makes both aluminum and stainless-steel pressure cookers for home use. There are also many excellent European models available through health food stores and oriental shops. The Aeternum brand, advertised in health food publications, is available in various sizes, from 3 to 12 liters.

Bancha Twig Tea (Kukicha)

Recipe

1. Place 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons of toasted twigs in 1-1/2 quarts of purified water and bring to a boil. (If you have untoasted twigs, you can toast them first in a dry cast-iron skillet. Stir constantly on medium heat until toasted.)

2. When the water boils, reduce heat to low and simmer for several minutes-about 3 minutes for a light tea and up to 12 minutes for a stronger tea.

3. To serve, pour tea through a small strainer. The twigs can be reused several times.

Note: Keep unused dry twigs in an airtight jar in order to preserve the flavor. Wet, used twigs should be stored in the refrigerator.

Purchasing Information

When shopping for bancha tea, be certain to get the twigs rather than leaves or a combination of leaves and twigs. (Toasted twigs are preferable.) Bancha leaves have a much higher percentage of caffeine than the twigs, which have only a trace. The twigs are rich in calcium, iron, complex carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. The minute amount of caffeine stimulates digestion and does not harm the body, as does coffee. In fact, it is the best drink for you when you decide to give up coffee for good.

Recommended brands of bancha are Mitoku and Eden. Both are available in organic stock. Many health food stores and some large grocery chains carry macrobiotic items such as bancha tea. If your local stores do not stock bancha tea, ask if it can be ordered for you. Most health food stores will order special items for customers upon request.

Steven Acuff’s healing seminars:

On April 12 and 13, 1993, Steven Acuff, internationally acclaimed macrobiotic consultant and lecturer, conducted a two-day Special Seminar on Practical Healing at the Royal Teton Ranch. Day one included an introductory lecture, five one-hour intensives on “Healing with the Five Transformations (Elements),” and a question and answer session.

Day two included three lectures on selecting the correct foods to increase one’s life force (“chi”), to support male and female energy and polarity, and to promote spiritual development. It concluded with questions and answers on the correct macrobiotic diet for pregnancy, mothers and children. The entire seminar will be available soon on audiocassette.

At Summit University Summer Session 1992, Mr. Acuff gave another excellent seminar
—Oriental Diagnosis: How to Evaluate Your Health. This three-day seminar is available on videocassette and is a must for everyone who values his health. See p. 260 for a complete listing of topics and price and ordering information.
